Living in Valletta

Malta's capital — historic, compact, and increasingly liveable

Practical guidance

Rent prices, transport schedules, and local conditions change. This page reflects general observations as of early 2026 — always verify before signing a lease or making plans.

Valletta is Malta's capital city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is small, walkable, and full of character. A growing number of apartments are available for rent, though options are limited compared to Sliema.

Typical Rent (1-bedroom)

Nearby Areas

Floriana, Sliema (via ferry), The Three Cities

Character & Vibe

Historic, compact, and architecturally striking. The streets are narrow and hilly. Valletta has undergone significant regeneration — new restaurants, bars, and cultural spaces have opened. It is quieter in the evenings than Sliema or St Julian's.

Transport & Getting Around

The main bus terminus is here — virtually all routes pass through Valletta. The Sliema ferry runs from the waterfront. Walking within Valletta is easy but hilly. Very limited parking.

Community & TCN Presence

Smaller expat community than Sliema but growing. Many government offices (including Identità Malta) are accessible from Valletta.

Pros

The main bus terminus — easiest connections on the island
Walkable within the city
Close to government offices and services
Cultural events, museums, and historic sites
Growing food and café scene

Cons

Limited rental supply — fewer apartments available
Streets are steep and hilly (challenging with heavy shopping)
Can feel quiet/empty in the evenings
Few large supermarkets — you may need to shop outside the city
No free parking within the city walls
