Malta's largest town — spread out but affordable

Birkirkara (B'Kara) is the most populated town in Malta. It is large and spread out, with a mix of old village core and newer development. It sits in the centre of the island.

Typical Rent (1-bedroom)

€600–€950/month for a 1-bedroom

Nearby Areas

Msida, San Ġwann, Santa Venera, Balzan

Character & Vibe

Suburban feel with a village centre. Birkirkara has a large parish church, a commercial high street, and residential streets that vary widely in character. The newer developments around the bypass road are more modern.

Transport & Getting Around

Well-connected by bus to Valletta, Mater Dei, and the central areas. The Birkirkara bypass provides motorway access. Not walkable to the coast — you will need a bus or car to reach the sea.

Community & TCN Presence

Mixed population with a growing TCN presence. Several Filipino and Indian community gatherings take place in the parish and community centres.

Pros

Affordable rent compared to coastal areas
Large town with many services (banks, shops, clinics)
Good bus connections through the town centre
Close to the Mater Dei Hospital area
Less tourist-driven — more Maltese daily life feel

Cons

Spread out — some areas are far from bus stops
No seafront or waterfront
Traffic can be heavy on the main roads
Feels suburban — less walkable than Sliema or Valletta
Older housing stock in some areas
