Internet, Phone & SIM Cards in Malta
Getting connected — mobile providers, broadband, and registration
Practical guidance
Getting a SIM card and internet connection is one of the first things to sort out. Malta has good mobile and broadband coverage across the island. You'll need ID to register a SIM card.
Mobile Providers
The three main operators are GO, Melita, and Epic. All offer prepaid and postpaid plans. Prepaid SIMs start from €5–€10 and are available from shops across the island (GO shops, Melita outlets, convenience stores). Monthly plans with data range from €10–€25.
SIM Registration
You need to show your passport or residence card when buying a SIM. This is a legal requirement in Malta. If your residence card hasn't arrived yet, your passport works. Some providers also require a selfie for verification.
Home Broadband
GO and Melita are the main home broadband providers. Speeds range from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps. Typical monthly costs: €20–€40. Installation takes 1–2 weeks after signing up. Many rental apartments already have a connection — check with your landlord before ordering a new one.
Free Wi-Fi
Many cafés, restaurants, and public spaces offer free Wi-Fi. The Valletta free Wi-Fi network covers most of the capital. McDonald's, Costa Coffee, and most large chains have free Wi-Fi. Libraries also offer free internet access.
