Schengen Visa (Type D)
A national long-stay visa required by some nationalities to enter Malta for work, issued before travel.
A Schengen Type D (national) visa is a long-stay visa that allows entry into Malta for the purpose of employment. Whether you need one depends on your nationality — citizens of visa-exempt countries can enter Malta visa-free for short stays, but a Type D visa is still required for work stays.
The visa is separate from the Single Permit. You apply for the visa at the Maltese embassy or consulate in your home country. Once in Malta, the Single Permit serves as your residence and work authorisation. Processing times vary by embassy — apply at least 6–8 weeks before your planned travel date.
