The permit question before you start applying

If you are an EU/EEA citizen: you can work in Malta freely. No permit. Apply normally and start work when offered.

If you are a non-EU citizen: you need a Single Permit, which is employer-sponsored. This means:

  • You need a firm job offer before the permit can be applied for.
  • The employer applies to Identità Malta on your behalf.
  • Processing takes approximately 4–12 weeks from application.
  • Established iGaming and tech employers are familiar with this process.
  • Small businesses and hospitality employers may be less experienced — ask HR whether they have sponsored permits before.

Networking in Malta

Malta’s professional community is small and interconnected. LinkedIn is the main professional network. SiGMA events (held in Malta, the world’s largest iGaming conference) attract the entire Maltese iGaming industry for networking. Many roles in Malta are filled through referrals before being advertised — building a LinkedIn presence and connecting with Malta-based professionals in your field is worth the effort.
