Permit Renewal

Permit renewal is the process of extending your Single Permit for a further period. You must apply while your current permit is still valid. Identità says renewal applications should be submitted up to 90 days before expiry, or 30 days before expiry if you need a health screening.

Your employer submits the renewal through the Single Permit Online Portal, following the same procedure as the first application. Live-in carers can apply directly if the employer endorses the application.

Since March 2026 there is also a New Course on Maltese Language and Culture for third-country nationals already in Malta. Press reports of the announcement say workers in roles treated as low-skilled must pass it and its exam to be considered for a two-year renewal instead of one year. Identità's announcement is no longer online, so confirm with Identità before relying on it.

Identità says that if you do not submit your renewal before your permit expires, you may fall into an irregular migration status. Keep proof of your submitted application.
