Long-Term Residence
A permanent status for third-country nationals after five years of legal and continuous residence in Malta.
Long-Term Residence (LTR) is a permanent status for third-country nationals who have lived in Malta legally and continuously for the five years before they apply.
Applicants need stable and regular resources for the two years before applying, suitable accommodation, sickness insurance, and to meet two integration conditions: a course of at least 100 hours attended in the 12 months before applying (passed with 75%), and Maltese at MQF Level 2 (passed with 65%). The Human Rights Directorate's I Belong 100-hour course counts towards the first.
The residence permit is valid for five years and renewable on application, and long-term residents can work without an employment licence, except in roles reserved for Maltese nationals or involving public authority.
Absences of six consecutive months or more, or more than ten months in total over the five years, break continuity.
