Xlendi is one of Gozo's most photogenic spots: a former fishing village tucked into a narrow bay where limestone cliffs drop straight into clear water on the island's southern coast. The waterfront is lined with restaurants and cafés, the swimming — mostly off rocks and a small shore — is clear and sheltered, and short coastal walks lead up onto the cliffs and out to an old watchtower. It is compact and can get busy on summer days, but in the shoulder seasons and the evenings it keeps the relaxed, scenic charm that makes it a favourite stop on Gozo.

Why visit Xlendi?
Xlendi packs a lot of Gozo's appeal into a small space. The bay is a natural amphitheatre, with cliffs closing in on either side and clear water in the middle, and the waterfront is just the right size for a slow lunch followed by a swim. It is the kind of place where you arrive for an hour and end up staying for the afternoon, watching small boats come and go and the light change on the rock.
It is not a sandy-beach destination — the swimming is off rocks and a small shore — and at the height of summer the compact bay and limited parking mean it can feel crowded around midday. Come earlier, later, or in the shoulder seasons and it is at its best.
Swimming and the water
Swimming at Xlendi is mostly off the flat rocks and a small foreshore around the bay. The water is clear and sheltered by the surrounding cliffs, which makes for calm conditions on most days and decent snorkelling when the sea is still. Water shoes are useful for getting in and out over the rock. As with anywhere on the coast, keep an eye on wind and conditions, and be aware that lifeguard cover is not guaranteed.

The watchtower and coastal walks
A short, scenic path climbs from the bay onto the surrounding cliffs, passing the Xlendi Tower — one of the old coastal watchtowers built to guard the islands — and opening up views back over the inlet and out to sea. It is an easy detour for anyone who wants to stretch their legs between a swim and lunch, though the ground is uneven and exposed to the sun, so shoes and water help.
Best time to visit
Late spring and early autumn are ideal — warm, clear water and a far more relaxed bay than the July–August peak, when Xlendi's compact waterfront and limited parking fill quickly around midday. September keeps the sea at its warmest, and the evenings here are a highlight in any of these months.
Getting here and getting around
Xlendi is reached via Victoria, Gozo's transport hub: buses connect the two in roughly 10–15 minutes. Coming from Malta, Gozo Channel ferries cross from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr in about 25 minutes, and you change in Victoria for Xlendi. The bay itself is compact and walkable, but parking is very limited and fills early in summer, so the bus is often the easier option. See the Gozo day-trip guide for how to combine Xlendi with Victoria and the rest of the island, and check current times before you travel.
Common mistakes
- Expecting a sandy beach — Xlendi's swimming is off rocks and a small shore.
- Arriving by car at summer midday, when parking and the bay are at their busiest.
- Skipping the short watchtower walk, which has the best views over the bay.
- Not bringing water shoes for getting in and out over the rock.
- Treating it as a half-day on its own — it pairs best with Victoria on a Gozo day.
