Best Beaches in Malta: Which One Suits You?

“Best beaches in Malta” depends on what you actually need — sand vs rocks, whether you have a car, and whether you're travelling with kids. Here's a practical comparison to help you choose.

Last reviewed: 12 June 2026Best for: choosing a Malta beach for your tripReading time: 6 min

Quick verdict:Travelling with young children and want the easiest sandy option? Mellieħa Bay (Għadira). Want a classic sandy beach with facilities nearby and don't mind crowds? Golden Bay. Prefer a quieter sandy spot and don't mind a short walk down steps? Għajn Tuffieħa. Staying in St Julian's or Sliema and want something within walking distance for an hour or two? St George's Bay. Looking for a calmer, more local alternative away from the main tourist beaches? Pretty Bay in Birżebbuġa.

By area

Malta's best-known sandy beaches are concentrated in the north and north-west of the island — Golden Bay, Mellieħa Bay, and Għajn Tuffieħa are all within a short distance of each other near Mellieħa. If you're staying in St Julian's, Sliema, or Valletta and don't want to travel far, St George's Bay in St Julian's is the closest sandy option, though much smaller. In the south-east, Pretty Bay in Birżebbuġa offers a sandy, sheltered alternative closer to the airport.

If you're planning a day trip to Gozo, Ramla Bay is one of Gozo's best-known sandy beaches — see our Gozo day trip guide for how to combine it with other stops.

Sandy vs rocky: what to expect

If sand is a priority — for building sandcastles, for young children, or simply for comfort — Golden Bay, Mellieħa Bay, Għajn Tuffieħa, and Pretty Bay are Malta's main sandy options. Much of the rest of Malta's coastline, including popular swimming spots around Sliema and the south coast, consists of flat limestone rock platforms with ladders or steps into the sea — good for swimming and sunbathing, but not for sand-based activities.

Without a car: getting to the beach by bus

Each of the beaches above is reachable by Malta Public Transport bus routes, though frequency and walking distance from the bus stop vary — Għajn Tuffieħa in particular involves a walk down (and later up) a long flight of steps from the road to the beach. St George's Bay is the most convenient if you're already staying in the St Julian's/Sliema area and want to avoid buses altogether for a short visit. Check current bus routes and stop locations for each beach before setting out.

Accessibility

Accessibility provisions vary significantly between beaches and can change over time. Mellieħa Bay and Golden Bay generally have flatter approaches from their car parks than Għajn Tuffieħa, which is only reachable via steps. If accessibility is a key factor for your visit, contact the relevant local council or check current published accessibility information before travelling, since on-the- ground conditions (matting, ramps, accessible parking) can change seasonally.
