Malta Bus Card for Tourists: tallinja Card vs Explore Pass vs Single Tickets

Malta's bus network has a few different ways to pay — single tickets, a reloadable tallinja card, or a multi-day Explore Malta pass. Here's how to work out which one suits your trip.

Last reviewed: 11 June 2026Best for: planning bus payments before you travelReading time: 5 min

Quick verdict: Taking the bus once or twice during your whole trip? Single tickets are simplest. Taking the bus regularly over several days but not every day, multiple times a day? A tallinja card usually works out cheaper per journey without committing to a fixed pass. Planning several bus trips a day across consecutive days — for example, day trips to different towns? An Explore Malta pass is likely to be the best value, but only if your usage matches its validity period. Always verify current prices before deciding, since fare products and prices for tourist passes change periodically.

Your options at a glance

  • Single ticket — pay per journey. Simplest option for very occasional bus use.
  • tallinja card — a reloadable card that you tap for each journey, typically at a lower per-ride cost than single tickets once loaded.
  • Explore Malta pass — a time-limited pass allowing unlimited travel within its validity period, aimed at visitors making frequent journeys over several days.

The honest version

The right choice comes down to how many bus journeys you expect to take and over how many days. A short city-break with one or two journeys rarely justifies a card or pass — single tickets are fine. A longer stay with regular but not constant bus use (a journey or two most days) is where a tallinja card tends to pay off, since the per-ride cost is usually lower than single tickets once it's loaded, with no expiry pressure. A trip built around day trips — visiting several different towns, beaches, or the Gozo ferry terminal on consecutive days — is where a multi-day Explore Malta pass is most likely to be worth it, provided your number of daily journeys is high enough to offset its price. If you're unsure, work out roughly how many bus rides you'll realistically take per day and compare that against the current single-fare price and pass price before deciding.

Practical tips

  • Check the current single-fare price, tallinja card top-up options, and Explore Malta pass prices and validity periods on the official Malta Public Transport website before you travel — these can change.
  • If buying a multi-day pass, plan to start it on a day when you'll actually be making several bus journeys, so its validity period isn't partly wasted on a low-travel day.
  • Check where cards and passes can be bought or topped up — options may include the airport, designated outlets, kiosks, or online, depending on what's currently available.
  • If your itinerary is mostly walking with occasional bus use (for example, the Valletta/Sliema/St Julian's area), single tickets or a lightly loaded tallinja card are usually enough.
