Gozo Day Trip from Malta: Ferry Options, Routes, and Best Stops

A day trip to Gozo is one of the most popular things to do from Malta — here's how the ferry crossing works, whether you should bring a car, and a realistic shortlist of stops for a single day.

Last reviewed: 12 June 2026Best for: planning a one-day Gozo visit from MaltaReading time: 6 min

Quick verdict:Travelling without a car and happy to focus on one or two areas? Take the ferry as a foot passenger and use Gozo's local buses or a hop-on hop-off tour around Victoria. Want to see several spread-out sights — Dwejra, Ramla Bay, Victoria, and Xlendi — in one day? Bring a car across on the ferry, or rent one on Gozo. Prefer a fixed plan with transport handled for you? An organised day tour covers the ferry and a set itinerary, at the cost of flexibility. Always verify current ferry times and the last return crossing before you go.

Ferry options

The main route between Malta and Gozo is the Gozo Channel ferry, running between Cirkewwa in the north-west of Malta and Mġarr on Gozo. The crossing itself is short — around 25 minutes — and the service runs frequently throughout the day, carrying both foot passengers and vehicles. Check the current timetable, frequency, and fares before planning around it.

In some seasons, additional direct ferry services have run between other Malta harbours (such as Sliema or Valletta) and Mġarr, cutting out the need to travel to Cirkewwa first. These routes are typically seasonal and not guaranteed to run every year, so check what is currently available before building your day around one.

To reach Cirkewwa without a car, Malta Public Transport buses run to the Cirkewwa ferry terminal from various parts of Malta — check current routes and journey times, and build in extra time for the bus journey when planning your ferry crossing.

How it worksTake a bus or taxi to Cirkewwa, board the Gozo Channel ferry as a foot passenger, then use Gozo's local buses, a hop-on hop-off bus, or taxis to get around; check current ferry frequency and last-return time.Drive (or be driven) onto the ferry at Cirkewwa and take the car across to Mġarr, giving full flexibility to reach Gozo's villages and beaches at your own pace; check current vehicle fares and peak-season queueing.Join a pre-booked coach or boat tour that handles transport, ferry tickets, and a fixed stop itinerary for you; check current operators, prices, and included stops.
Best forVisitors without a car who are comfortable planning local transport on Gozo, or who plan to stick to one or two well-connected areas (e.g. Victoria/Rabat, Ramla Bay)Visitors with a rental car on Malta who want to see several spread-out Gozo sights (e.g. Dwejra, Ramla Bay, Victoria, Xlendi) in one day without waiting for busesVisitors who prefer a fixed plan with transport and a guide included, and don't want to manage ferry timings or local transport themselves

Route choices: getting around once you're on Gozo

Once you arrive at Mġarr, your options for getting around depend on whether you brought a car. Without one, Gozo's local bus network connects Mġarr to Victoria (Rabat), the island's main town and a natural hub for onward connections, and hop-on hop-off tour buses run circular routes covering many of the island's well-known viewpoints and villages. With a car, you can drive directly between spread-out sights without waiting for connections — useful if your shortlist includes places on opposite sides of the island, such as Dwejra in the west and Ramla Bay in the north. Check current local bus routes and frequency before relying on a tight route.

Best stops for a single day

Gozo is small, but trying to see everything in one day usually means rushing and seeing very little properly. A more realistic approach is to pick two or three areas based on your interests and build the day around them, leaving room for lunch and the return ferry:

  • Victoria (Rabat) and the Citadel— Gozo's main town, with the hilltop Citadel offering views across much of the island. A natural first or central stop given its transport links.
  • Dwejra— a dramatic stretch of coastline on the west of the island, known for its rock formations and inland sea. Best reached with a car or as part of an organised tour, since it's further from Mġarr and Victoria.
  • Ramla Bay— one of Gozo's best-known sandy beaches, on the north coast. A good stop if swimming is part of your plan, but can get busy in peak season.
  • Xlendi — a small harbour town on the south-west coast with a more relaxed, village feel, good for a meal or a short walk along the waterfront.

If you're without a car and have limited time, Victoria plus one nearby stop reachable by local bus or short taxi is often more enjoyable than trying to reach all four of the above in a single day.

Timing

Aim to take an early ferry crossing to maximise time on Gozo, and identify your planned return crossing before you set off — especially outside peak summer season, when ferry frequency can drop later in the day. Build in buffer time for the journey back to Cirkewwa (or your chosen departure point) so a delay doesn't mean missing the last ferry of the day. Check current first and last crossing times by season.

Booking a tour

If you'd rather not plan ferry times and local transport yourself, organised day tours from Malta typically combine the ferry crossing with a coach or minibus itinerary covering several of Gozo's well-known sights, sometimes including Comino's Blue Lagoon as an additional stop. These can be a good option if you prefer a fixed plan, though they offer less flexibility than travelling independently. Check current tour operators, prices, and included stops before booking.
