Electricity and water provider: ARMS

Electricity and water in Malta are supplied by Enemalta (electricity) and the Water Services Corporation (WSC), billed together through ARMS (Automated Revenue Management Services). Meters are read every two months and billed accordingly.

When you move into a new apartment, your landlord should transfer the ARMS account to your name or arrange for a deposit. If bills arrive in the previous tenant’s name, contact ARMS to update the account.

Malta’s tap water is technically safe to drink but has a distinct mineral taste due to desalination processes. Most residents buy bottled water for drinking. A 1.5L bottle costs €0.40–€0.70 at supermarkets.

Internet and broadband

Malta has decent broadband infrastructure, with both GO and Epic offering fibre-based home internet in most residential areas. Typical speeds on residential plans are 100–300 Mbps download.

  • GO Broadband: Standard plans from approx. €22–€30/month. GO also offers bundles with TV and landline.
  • Epic Broadband: Similar price range. Epic was formerly Melita, and some properties still have old Melita cabling.
  • Contract length: Most home broadband plans are 12–24 months. Check early-exit terms before signing.
  • Setup time: Allow 1–3 weeks for engineer visit and setup in a new apartment.

Mobile plans

The main mobile operators are GO, Epic, and Vodafone Malta. Prepaid SIM cards are available at airports, telco shops, and supermarkets.

  • Prepaid SIMs: Good for newcomers in the first month. Data bundles of 5–20 GB cost €10–€20/month on prepaid.
  • Monthly contracts: 24-month contracts with handset typically start at €15–€25/month for voice + data bundles. Verify ID requirements — some operators need a Maltese ID card or residence permit for contracts.
  • EU roaming: Malta is in the EU. You will not pay roaming charges when visiting other EU/EEA countries.

Gas

Many Malta apartments use LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) cylinders for cooking rather than piped natural gas. Gas cylinder rental and refills cost €20–€40 per fill depending on cylinder size. Gas cylinder suppliers deliver to most addresses. If your apartment has an electric hob and oven, you will not need gas at all.
