Read the bill before estimating the budget
ARMS distinguishes domestic, residential and non-residential tariff categories. Its calculator asks for dates, account type, registered people and meter readings. A property’s floor area alone cannot tell you which inputs apply.
- Ask for a recent electricity/water bill and confirm whether readings are actual or estimated.
- Record opening meter readings with dated photographs when you move in.
- Check the tariff category and the people registered on the account.
- Agree in writing who receives bills, how shared costs are divided and how the final balance is settled.
ARMS says household registration can affect billing rates. Ask ARMS about account or household changes; do not assume a landlord’s verbal assurance has updated the record.
Estimate consumption rather than promising a summer surcharge
Illustrative arithmetic: an appliance drawing a steady 1 kW for five hours daily over 30 days uses 150 kWh. That is an energy-use example, not a prediction of an air conditioner’s actual draw or your bill. Real consumption, tariff bands, service charges and other bill items still need checking.
Enter the property’s data in the official ARMS calculator and compare it with the bill. ARMS describes the result as illustrative and says the actual bill prevails if the two differ.
The older fixed winter/summer totals and gas-refill ranges have been removed because they were not tied to a verifiable household or current supplier quote. If the property uses bottled gas, ask about cylinder size, deposit, refill, delivery and safe installation separately.
Compare the whole broadband contract
The provider-name correction of 24 October 2026 remains: GO, Melita and Epic are distinct operators; Epic was not formerly Melita.

Keep setup cash separate from monthly spending
For each quote, record any installation, equipment or deposit payment; the monthly price during and after the offer; the contract length; and early-termination terms. Check an actual installation appointment before treating broadband as available for your first working day. For shared housing, confirm who holds the contract and how you leave it.
Mobile plans and roaming
Compare prepaid and contract offers against your own data use, proof-of-identity requirements and commitment period. Check whether hotspot use or a device is included rather than assuming a cheap headline covers everything.

No. Consumption, tariff category, billing dates and household details affect the calculation. Use recent property bills and the official ARMS calculator as an illustration, not a guaranteed quote.
Which providers should I compare for home internet?
GO, Melita and Epic offer home internet. Compare address availability, connection type, installation, minimum term and the full price after promotional discounts.
Is EU roaming always unlimited and free?
No. Roam-like-at-home rules are for periodic travel and are subject to fair-use conditions. Data limits and surcharges can apply; permanent use abroad is a separate issue.
