Best Areas in Malta for Digital Nomads 2026
Malta is small enough that you are never far from a beach or a supermarket, but the choice of area still matters. Rent, internet reliability, walkability, noise levels, and community access vary significantly between Sliema, St Julian's, Valletta, Gzira, and Gozo.

Sliema
Sliema is the most densely developed area and the heart of Malta's expat community. It has the most supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, gyms, and restaurants of any area outside Valletta. The seafront promenade (Il-Fgura) is a popular walking and running route.
The downside: it is busy, expensive, and increasingly touristy. Traffic is heavy and parking is difficult. Newer apartment buildings have modern fits and fast fibre broadband; older buildings can vary significantly in quality.

St Julian's
St Julian's (Paceville) is Malta's nightlife district and iGaming headquarters. Many of Malta's gaming companies have offices here, which creates an informal professional network for anyone in that sector. Spinola Bay is one of the most photogenic spots in Malta.
The party-area reputation (Paceville specifically) can mean noise at weekends if you live very close to it. The broader St Julian's area outside Paceville is calmer. Rent is slightly lower than Sliema on average.
Gzira
Gzira sits between Sliema and Msida and is one of the better-value areas for nomads who want access to all of Sliema's amenities without the Sliema premium. It has good transport links, a marina, and several cafés. Fibre broadband from both GO and Melita is widely available.

Valletta
Valletta is Malta's historic capital — a UNESCO World Heritage city of Baroque architecture and narrow streets. It is walkable, characterful, and has a growing café and restaurant scene following investment post its 2018 European Capital of Culture year.
The practical issue for nomads: housing stock is limited and often in older buildings with varying broadband quality. Valletta empties out at night and on Sundays. Parking is very limited. For nomads who want a historically rich, pedestrian city environment, it is excellent.
Gozo
Gozo offers the cheapest rents in the Maltese Islands and a dramatically different pace of life — rural, quiet, and oriented around the sea and countryside. Victoria (Rabat) is the main town with services; Marsalforn and Xlendi are beach villages.
For nomads: the ferry crossing (from Ċirkewwa in north Malta) takes about 25 minutes on the boat, but with waiting time and drive time, visiting the mainland takes 60–90 minutes each way. Internet is generally slower than the mainland. Gozo suits long-term stay nomads who value quiet and low cost over urban amenity.
