Pre-Departure Course
What this is
An online course and short interview for many first-time Single Permit applicants.
Who is involved: Identità, which checks the certificate. The process is completed online through the Skills Pass Portal, with interviews at ITS Malta or an authorised assessment centre.
It may concern you if…
- A third-country national applying for a Malta Single Permit for the first time.
- Someone applying from abroad, through a new or a Still Abroad application.
- A student who plans to change from a study permit to a Single Permit.
- Someone who held a Single Permit before, left the Schengen Area, and later applies again from abroad.
It usually does not concern you if…
- Someone who already holds a valid Single Permit, unless they apply again as a first-time applicant.
- Someone with a valid Single Permit who is changing employer or job title.
- A third-country national who has lived in Malta for eight years or more.
- Someone moving to Malta without applying for a Single Permit, for example an EU citizen.
Not sure?
Ask the employer preparing your Single Permit application, or contact Identità. Have a general question ready, such as whether your application counts as a first application. You do not have to share passport or ID numbers to ask a general question.

Practise skills that help
- Confirm an appointment time
The interview is booked for a set time, so confirm the day and time clearly.
- Ask someone to repeat
The interview is live and in English, so it helps to ask politely when you miss something.
- Who published this?
Check that course information comes from the official provider, not a reposted message.
- Check the date and the audience
Rules for first applications and renewals differ, so check who a page is written for.
What this page is not
MaltaPathway is independent. This page does not enrol you, collect fees, decide whether a programme applies to you, or predict results. The official provider decides.
